Cold start to May

A cold southerly change is spreading up the country today and frost is highly likely tonight in Central Otago and Nelson. Hawkes Bay and Gisborne see showers throughout the night and a breezy southerly but temperatures could fall well below freezing by dawn on Monday about sheltered parts of the South Island.

A large anticyclone is building in the Tasman Sea and a ridge moves onto the South Island tonight.
